Chapter 22

The bell over the door rang when Deputy Kimberly Streeter opened it, and Chase Carvelle looked up from the rack where he was stocking patterns in his mother’s fabric store and felt a brief flutter in his chest. He had seen the woman deputy around town a few times, and every time he did, he experienced the same feeling. With her long chestnut hair in a French braid hanging down her back, and a body that made his sixteen-year-old hormones jump and shout, Chase could only dream of a woman like that. And dream of her he did, which made for some awkward mornings when Ma came in to wake him up.

Kimberly smiled at the young man who was gawking at her as she approached, and she asked, “Are you Chase?”

“Huh?”

“Chase? Are you Chase?”

“Umm, yes, ma’am.”

He wondered how she could know who he was. Girls never seemed to know who he was, even the ones that had been in every class with him all through school since the first grade.

She extended her hand and he stared at it for a moment before realizing he was supposed to shake it. Her hand felt warm in his, and he didn’t notice that his own was sweaty just from the contact.

“I’m Deputy Streeter,” she told him. “I’m glad I finally caught you.”

“Caught me, ma’am?”

He didn’t realize he was still holding her hand. All he could think about was why was she trying to catch him. Had he done something wrong?

Kimberly gently pulled her hand from his, and when she did, he missed the feeling of it already.

“Yes,” she told him. “I stopped in this morning, but your mom said you weren’t here and told me you would be here this afternoon.”

“Yes, ma’am. She had to take my grandma to the doctor, so I’m watching the store.”

“Great. Well, I’m glad I finally got to meet you,” Kimberly told him.

Chase wanted to tell her she couldn’t have been as glad that they met as he was, but that’s not the kind of thing he could ever say to a girl. Especially not one this beautiful. As his mind worked awkwardly, trying to think of something to say to her, she said, “I noticed you have a security camera out in front, and I wanted to see if I could review the footage from a few nights ago. But your mom said she didn’t know anything about it and you were the person to ask because you installed it. She said you’re kind of a techno wizard.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t say that, ma’am. I know a little about things, but not much.”

“Whatever you know, I’m sure it’s a lot more than I do,” she assured him. “Would you mind?”

“Mind what, ma’am?”

“Would you mind letting me review the footage from a few nights ago?”

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “It’s in the back room. I mean, the computer’s in the back room.”

“Lead the way,” Kimberly told him. “I’ll follow you.”

Chase’s mind was going a mile a minute. In his wildest fantasies, he could never imagine having a woman like this in the back room of the shop.
